THE VISION
Four years ago, we decided to form a charity to fund a project that would make the message about how food choices impact the environment and health. We assembled an Advisory Board comprised of internationally acclaimed teachers, authors and researchers to assist us. This board includes nutritionists, doctors, marine scientists, psychologists, climate scientists, legal experts and vegan activists.
It was our vision to create free educational material for schools, and community groups that explored the issues of food production, environment, nutrition, and human and non-human health. We have already begun making our first workbooks. You can view our trial videos and workbooks on the website
THE VISION GROWS
2024 was an important year for us. We were both invited to speak at the Oxford Literary Festival, and Marlene was sponsored to design the menus for two vegan gala dinners. Our presentations and the dinners were enthusiastically received by several hundred attendees. We have now been invited to the Gibraltar Literary Festival, where Marlene will again design the menus, and we will have the opportunity to present to a new group.
MOVING FORWARD
The Human Ecology Project is moving forward to assist in the creation of a healthy society and planet for human and non-human life. We would kindly ask you to take a few minutes out of your busy day and watch the short video above. We all need to do what we can to create a healthy and peaceful world for the coming generations.
The greatest gift we can give is a better world for the young and those unborn. Will we leave a legacy of a planet stripped of life or an environment that is vital and life-sustaining? The decision is ours.
HELP US HELP THEM
Health education is essential to redefining our attitudes and actions toward establishing a healthy and peaceful planet. This education needs to be multifaceted; many specific demographics need to be reached. One of these groups is the teens of the world. This is an area where our future work will focus.
Teens and young adults have boundless energy and can harness that energy for individual and social change. Historically they have aligned themselves with issues of social justice if properly informed.
A 2022 study found that 37% of teens were anxious about climate change. A 2023 study showed that Generation Z (11- to 26-year-olds) had the highest percentage stating that they planned to stop eating meat. 43% said they planned to stop meat eating. These signs are helpful, but growth must be nourished with good and reliable information.
Food is the most intimate biological connection between the environment and us. The food we eat is a central issue in creating a sustainable future for all life on earth, both human and non-human.
Even though international organisations, governments, medical experts and economists continually recognise this, it is usually placed under the heading of “things to do in the future”. Any urgency of action is buried under the weight of economic concerns, nutritional mythologies and cultural habits.
This is an issue of survival, for us, the animals and the natural world. The outlook does not need to be grim. People have the capacity to change, particularly when they understand the challenges and appreciate the benefits. It only takes a pebble to start a landslide.
EDUCATION IS KEY
The motivation that leads people to change to a vegan life varies. Connections need to be made between the moral, social, health and environmental areas of impact. It is human actions that drive the present crisis, without changes in attitude we face a dangerous future.
Our intention has always been to provide education on the ways that people can create a healthy way of living, providing practical strategies to the barriers to change and an unapologetic and practical approach to solutions.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Our present animal-based food system is the primary driver of environmental destruction, non-communicable diseases in humans, and the needless killing of billions of animals. Food is central.
THE JOY OF LEARNING
Our pilot cooking and nutrition programmes for the young, and video/workbook workshop programmes for older students have been enthusiastically received. Recently, we were happy to present two school programmes. The Healthy Cooking Classes were educational and fun for both the students and teachers who attended. We are ready to expand our services.
Our efforts are now moving closer to reality.
We have been given a matching grant of $20,000 to advance our work, if we raise this amount in the next six months it will become $40,000 and allow us to push out to more schools and community groups. This is where we need your help by participating in our Crowdfunding Project.
BE A CHANGEMAKER
Our campaign goal and the link to our crowdfunding page are live. It is straightforward to donate. Trusting ourselves, our intentions, and the goodwill of others to help us reach our target drives us both daily. Please help us grow by donating today. Thank you.
In good health
