With this campaign, we hope to raise £10,000 by Monday 14th September to offer care experienced young people aged 12-25 years old, the opportunity to overcome adversity and achieve the extraordinary, sailing on the West Coast of Scotland and building resilience and personal development

By backing this project, you will be giving a life-changing experience to deserving young people and there are a variety of rewards ranging from £5 to £1,000.

SUMMARY

Young people in care face extreme adversity at a very young age and the disruption caused often leads to breakdowns in relationships and education.

Over 14,000 children and young people are ‘looked after’ in Scotland; in the care of social work services. Care leavers are four times more likely to take their own life than other young people. 30% of young homeless people have spent time in care.

The legacy of traumatic early childhood experiences is long lasting, young people in care and those with care experience face challenges every day that require resilience, fortitude and strength of character, that the system has not equipped them with.

ABOUT CARE TO SAIL

Care to Sail is a Sail Training organisation that works with young people, who are in care or have been in care, we enable them to overcome adversity and achieve the extraordinary.

Sail Training is a proven platform for working with young people from all nationalities, social and ethnic backgrounds. Sailing provides a platform for personal development in a way that is not achieved ashore, by the nature of its environment, challenges and rewards.

Sail training is a valuable tool that provides young people the opportunity for personal development in a challenging and dynamic environment. Our voyages take care experienced young people sailing for 1 – 10 days, during this time they learn to sail and navigate the boat, live independently, work as a team, build personal resilience and learn the value of effective communication skills. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and the acceptance of personal responsibility, promotes an acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks

In addition, Sail Training provides an opportunity for the propagation of social capital and citizenship skills in the young people that engage and encourage development in the following areas;

  • Increase self-confidence, self-esteem, motivation and tolerance
  • Enhancement of teamwork and communication skills
  • It allows participants to identify personal strengths and weaknesses in a supportive, honest and open environment
  • Manage and overcome setbacks and obstacles, both physical and mental
  • Gain appreciation of the social value of rules and regulations in an environment that demands structure
