We plan to replace the Alexander Fleming memorial in his hometown of Darvel with a new one which will celebrate his amazing discovery.
The discovery of Penicillin by Alexander Fleming in September 1928 changed the course of modern medicine. Many of us would not be here without it!
There are many memorials honouring Fleming around the world but the memorial in his hometown is in a very sorry state. Replacing the crumbling memorial in Darvel will be very expensive. We have already secured £200k from Pride in Place Government funding, but we need more!
Fleming generously gifted his discovery to the world, saving millions of lives in WWll and beyond as many simple infections will become life threatening without antibiotics. We think the least we can do to commemorate the centenary of his discovery is create a fitting monument in his hometown.
