Aim: By monitoring and publicising pollution levels and limiting floodwater in the Char we aim to revitalise the river and encourage wildlife.
The River Char is beautiful and much loved with many tributaries running throughout the valley. On some winter mornings, cold air flows over warmer water evaporating into water droplets forming a mist which gradually drifts out to sea like a Dragon’s breath – hence the name of the Charmouth Dragon Festival we have created to involve the local community in protecting the river. Pollution from sewage spills, agricultural slurry, septic tank leakage, urban run-off and microplastics threaten it. As part of this, we monitor water quality in the river regularly to identify toxic levels of chemicals and harmful bacteria. We have a large team of volunteers performing riverfly sampling to identify insect life in the river bed. Our vision is for wildlife to survive and thrive and for children and adults to use the water safely. All our work costs money. Please donate to help us continue our success in tackling the pollution, to clean up and revitalise the river.
