Aim

We run free community photography workshops to help people affected by low income in Glasgow…and we need a new computer!

Why House On Legs?

Over the last 20 years, support for the Arts has been decimated in the UK, and it’s hit disadvantaged people hardest.  But we believe that access to a creative life should be available to EVERYONE; not just those who can afford the equipment and private classes.

House On Legs was therefore built on the belief that it shouldn’t just be wealthy people who get nice things.

Our programmes increase self-worth and belonging within local communities.  We help people tell their own stories, challenge stereotypes…and have fun!

Workshops are tailored to each group and cover everything from fashion shoots in a photo studio, to building pinhole cameras and developing film using coffee.

Why this (computer) matters

Putting it bluntly, we can’t do our social outreach without one!

Sustainability is very important to us, so we don’t replace equipment unless it’s REALLY necessary…and our current computer is a spectacular 15 years old (it’s time to send the poor thing to ‘Silicon Heaven’).

A new computer will allow us to forge-onwards, offering an even richer experience to local people for whom photography equipment and workshops are out of reach.  More computing power also means we can also expand our offering, including things like video production and bullet time photography.

Exciting times!

More about us

House On Legs is a Glasgow-based social enterprise (or ‘Community Interest Company’) which uses photography to help local people who are affected by low income.

It was founded in 2025 by photographer Steven Jones; a pleasant chap with nearly 20 years of professional photography experience who takes warm, energetic photos and has a tendency to overthink things (bless him).

THE VISION!

Our long-term / Blue-Sky / ‘Wishing-on-a-staaaaaar’ Vision is for House On Legs to be fully self-sustaining: with commercial commissions funding all our social outreach and running costs.

Why should companies commission us?

We’re glad you asked!  Well on top of a beautifully-completed brief, companies that commission us also receive an impact report, showing how their money went on to help support our work in the community.  They can add this to their ESG or CSR reports to show that their company values aren’t just words.

So it’s like when breakfast cereals used to come with a free toy (except replace ‘toy’ with ‘meaningful social change’)

But since House On Legs is still young and finding its feet, we’re running this crowdfunder to help us carry on AND get there faster, all whilst building the aforementioned cash-shaped-pipeline in the background.

How the funds will be used

We need a computer powerful enough to handle the notoriously processor-hungry image-editing software, so we’re aiming at a M5 MacBook Pro, costing £3000.

The portability of a laptop over a desktop machine will also add flexibility as it’ll mean we can offer workshops and shoots on location as well as in our studio (which is opposite The Barras if you ever want to pop in).

If we pass our £3000 goal, extra funds will be invested in yet more professional-grade equipment to help further our mission.  For example:

  • A Nikon ZR video camera for video production workshops and filming BTS of our workshops - £1400
  • Software subscriptions
    • Capture One (industry-standard program for shooting in the studio) - £260
    • Adobe Photoshop (for editing/retouching) - £239.64/yr
    • Adobe InDesign (for layout - making ‘zines!) - £239.64/yr
  • An Eizo computer monitor (for editing and retouching) - from £700
