Further support would enable us to support people with phone top ups
No Evictions is supporting 50 asylum seekers placed in a hotel on the outskirts of Glasgow. Most of these people will start fasting for Ramadan this weekend. Mears (the housing provider) are not providing adequate or appropriate food to enable a period of fasting for 16 hours.
We want to raise money to provide additional food during this period.
To get to the local mosque is over 1 hour walk round trip, and while people are fasting they have less energy for exercise.
We want to raise money to provide bus passes to travel to the mosque.
Wider context
Glasgow City Council is refusing to accept the dispersal of asylum seekers into the city. Instead asylum seekers are now being placed in isolated suburbs outside of the city, or in cities further north that do not have support systems or solidarity networks in place.
Mears hold the contract for housing asylum seekers in Scotland. Since they won the contract in 2019, Mears have failed to secure adequate safe and dignified housing. Instead, they have resorted to using budget hotels that have no cooking facilities for individuals, with people subject to mass catering, and providing only £8/week for people to support themselves on.
No Evictions stands against hotel detention, and stands for safe own-door housing for all. No Evictions wants to see asylum seekers welcomed back into Glasgow into appropriate accommodation in the community.
