Aim

The Horizon Disability Friendship Group provides a safe space for people with physical and mental disabilities to meet and socialise.

In December the Horizon Disability Friendship Group celebrated it's 2nd anniversary. The Group was founded by Lewis Phillips with help from his mother and her partner and Southmead Development Trust and seed funding from Mencap. The Group meets every Wednesday from 6-8pm at the Greenway Centre. In the two years membership has more than doubled to a regular attendance of more that 20 members and careers, with an age range from 18-80. Each session includes a hot or cold drink and a biscuit, some games of bingo (very popular), activities such as colouring, simple puzzles, and bracelet making. Also group games like Guess the Card and a version of Mr & Mrs devised by Lewis's mum. In these games, and the bingo, members can win small, practical, prizes of foodstuffs, cosmetics, toiletries, and small gifts.  Lewis says “Any in date donations for these prizes are always really appreciated and can be left at the Greenway Reception”.

As with many small groups and clubs sustainable funding is always an issue. Horizon members pay £1 per session and this, together with some donations, has allowed the group to continue. Each year the Group provides a Christmas special and a summer bar-B-que, and this year the Group hopes to hold a Karaoke Disco in the spring. Lewis is keen to hold the membership fee to £1 as long as possible so is always looking for funding and donations.
