Creating spaces for refugees and asylum seekers in limbo to re-create tastes of home
Hello there, we're homieats!
About us
We're an early stage start-up founded by sisters with a shared love for food and feeding other humans.
Growing up in Singapore with Tamil roots, and family scattered across the ocean, we’ve always found ourselves, eating first, and then creating foods – ideas and concepts flowing in from all directions, but always with a touch of mum’s flavours.
And we thought why not make it a thing while bringing together more homies across the ocean.
Our concept
homieats is a space for refugees and asylum seekers in limbo to re-create a taste of home through cooking and food.
The name ‘homieats’ is inspired by a Sri Lankan-Tamil phrase ‘short eats’, which is basically our version of finger food or tea-time appetisers, if you will.
We’ll be taking you on a journey of deconstructing foods of the world.
We’ll reconstruct them in new ways, short eats-style – aka ‘homieats’ – inspired by other homies we work with who have crossed the ocean.
Why we need your support
We hope to host regular social events for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.
We look to create spaces where they can enjoy a taste of home, meet new people, and feel welcome in our communities.
We provide work opportunities for those with refugee status as Food Product Developers / Storytellers to craft plates and cook meals at our events.
The funds raised will be used to:
What we have done so far
Over the la
st year we have organised various socials for refugees and asylum seekers in partnership with Care4Calais, Breadwinners and Paiwand.
The families and young people were incredibly appreciative and happy to enjoy food from home. The kids had so much fun in a space outside the hotels, even getting to know and play with each other.
