A Permanent Home for ELSH: Securing Our Future, Empowering Our Community

Our Story

For years, the Educational Learning Support Hub (ELSH) has been a lifeline in Barnsley for sanctuary seekers, and migrants. We began with a simple belief: language should never be a barrier to a dignity-filled, self-sufficient life.

Every week, hundreds of learners walk through our doors seeking more than just English lessons they are looking for hope, community, and the tools to rebuild their lives. From helping a parent speak to their child’s teacher to guiding a skilled newcomer toward their first job in South Yorkshire, ELSH turns isolation into belonging.

However, operating out of temporary, rented facilities limits how many people we can support. To ensure no one is turned away, we need a permanent place to call home.

Who We Are: Meet the Team Behind ELSH

ELSH (Registered Charity No. 1186050) is driven by a passionate team of qualified educators, dedicated staff, and dozens of incredible volunteers many of whom were once ELSH students themselves.

Our team brings deep expertise in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teaching, digital literacy, and holistic community support. Having supported thousands of learners over the years, our leadership and volunteer network understand firsthand the challenges of relocation and integration. We don't just teach language; we walk alongside our students every step of the way.

Our Big Idea & Vision

Our vision is to build a vibrant, permanent community hub in Barnsley that acts as a national model for social integration and economic empowerment.

Securing our own building will allow us to:

Expand Classrooms: Double our capacity for ESOL and digital skills classes to clear our waiting lists.

Launch New Services: Host dedicated job clubs, mental health support groups, and childcare facilities during lessons.

Create a Community Center: Open a welcoming drop-in space for cultural exchange, workshops, and local partnership events.

By securing a permanent footprint, ELSH will remain an anchor of stability for generations to come fostering community cohesion and contributing directly to the regional economy.
