Aim
We want to buy HIVE Cafe in Huddersfield to keep it open... now as a worker owned cooperative!
HIVE café has been a much-loved community café since 2021, set up to help people navigate services and create a safe space for people feeling isolated or needing support for a variety of reasons. It’s founder and dedicated team of directors, staff and volunteers have created an accessible warm and welcoming space for social groups, well-being groups, LGBQT+ youth groups and space for developing skills through volunteering.
But things change and HIVE café recently went on the market. We are a group of people who love Hive and don't want to see it close. We want to keep it open and continue its ethos as a safe and welcoming space for the whole community!
So, we have decided to buy the cafe and keep it running... now as a worker owned co-op!
Why we love Hive Cafe so much!
HIVE Cafe is a much-needed safe space for the whole community. It is a place for people to meet, eat delicious vegan and vegetarian food, and enjoy excellent coffees and teas. It is a home several vital community support networks and as an LGBTQ+ friendly and Trans inclusive public space it means a massive amount to many of us and is needed now even more. If you love Hive as much as we do, please contribute to our crowdfunder and help us keep it going and keep this vital resource in Huddersfield.

What is a workers cooperative?
As a worker owned cooperative, Hive café will be a Not-for-Profit business, owned and managed collectively by its staff for the benefit of the whole community. Profits will go back into the café to continue to develop it for for both customers and staff or reinvested into new and wider community projects.
Our plans for the Future
For the time being the café will remain as it is, keeping the space and the ethos that work so well and are loved by so many. Over time, the cooperative will bring their own ideas and skills into the mix, depending on the needs and interests of both customers and staff.
What about Hive Community groups and activities?
The good news is that that separate to the café, the founding team will continue to run as Hive Huddersfield CIC continuing their work with communities and the new café management will look forward to welcoming those established groups as well as growing our own networks and events.
