Aim: Her Land aims to give women and girls the skills needed to heal and care for both themselves and the land.
Her Land is a women-led social enterprise based on a farm just outside Thame, Oxfordshire with the vison of becoming a unique regenerative development where women an girls gain the skills to heal both themselves and the land, for a healthier, regenerative world for all.
The project currently delivers weekly sessions for women to get involved in a variety of activities outside. This Crowdfunder will allow us to expand these sessions to girls, and mums with children under the age of 5.
A bit about Her Land
The project was founded by Clare Freeman and Becky Reid. Clare inherited the site from her late father, Robert Freeman, a farmer, and developed the idea for Her Land. She later met Becky, an Environmental Project Officer for Thame Town Council, and together they began shaping Her Land into the initiative it is today.
As well as giving women and girls the opportunity to learn skills and participate in climate friendly growing and building, Her Land seeks to improve the health, wellbeing, and lives of everyone that takes part. The project provides the opportunity for them to build resilience, confidence, connection to the earth, and crucially, connection to other women and girls.
In the future we also aim to provide services and spaces for women and girls who have experienced abuse and violence, in response to the 'epidemic' of violence against women and girls in the UK today.
Land Restoration
Since November 2024 Her Land has been organising regular volunteering sessions at the site. Women have turned up in rain, snow, wind and drought, and have together established a syntropic agroforestry growing field at the site. This field showcases how we can grow food in a way that improves soil health and biodiversity, and which doesn't rely on chemical inputs and is more resilient to the changing climate.
For those who have taken part, volunteering has been a chance to contribute to a project with strong environmental and social values while learning more about sustainable land management in practice.
We have been able to host workshops at Her Land to teach others about regenerative farming and building practices, and would like to continue to do this. These will be delivered to the wider community as well as to smaller female-only groups. Additional funding above our target will go towards supporting these learning opportunities.
Community Participation
Her Land provides a supportive and inclusive space, encouraging participation from a wide range of women and girls, including those looking to build new skills or connect with nature through practical, hands-on work.
The project would not be possible without the brilliant volunteers who make every part of the project happen - from weeding to governance; from delivering activities for teenage girls to emptying our compost loo! We are building a community of women and girls who share a passion for the project, and who often find new friendships and a sense of belonging.
As the site is restored, we will provide women and girls with more access to healing spaces and nature. We will begin to deliver wellbeing workshops, events, and activities that foster healing, personal development, and environmental stewardship, ensuring that women and girls are equipped to thrive and lead in a sustainable world. In this, we particularly want to support women and girls who have experienced abuse and violence.
Restoring heritage through regenerative building
Over the coming years, the site will continue to evolve, with unique heritage spaces repaired and conserved. These spaces will support learning, well-being, and community-led activities. The farm includes a walled garden, an 18th-century threshing barn, cow sheds and a medieval farmhouse, all of which will be carefully restored using natural and regenerative materials and methods.
Women remain underrepresented in the construction industry. Her Land aims to give women and girls valuable building skills that are future-focused and fit for our changing world and climate. This will include opportunities for women to participate in this restoration work through a variety of skills-based workshops.
Partners and Supporters
A growing group of partners are supporting our work. This includes local businesses who arrange regular days on site to support the project in whatever ways are needed. We have also received funding from trusts and foundations, including the Trust for Oxfordshire's Environment (TOE) and Oxfordshire Community Foundation. TOE very kindly provided us with our video so a huge thanks to them!
