Help us secure the future of the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, North Shields Fish Quay – help us to raise £2,400 to keep afloat

Like many other community enterprises we’ve had to close our doors and won’t re-open until we’re advised that it’s safe to do so.

In the meantime, we’re hoping that all of our volunteers, members and customers and their loved ones stay well and that it’s not too long before our café is filled with their chatter and that our exhibitions and events programme is back up and running.

While in the coming weeks we’ll be applying for any available financial support, we need to start fund raising now to make sure we can stay afloat and be ready to re-open when the time is right.

As a charity, every penny counts and we have limited reserves. Under normal circumstances the income from our café and our exhibitions and events programme is needed to supplement whatever we receive in grants.

We’ve estimated that with the financial support pledged by the Government, if we raise £2,400 we will have enough money to pay our bills and overheads for three months. It would be a great help if you could make a donation to help us, for example, the money you might spend on a visit to the café for coffee and cake or a sandwich, or to take part in or attend one of our exhibitions, events or activities.

About us

We are a small heritage centre on North Shields Fish Quay, with a café, shop, heritage gallery and community space, run by the community for the community.

We have a small number of staff, a board of trustees, almost 200 volunteers and 450 members. Our exhibitions and events are delivered by our volunteers and members who have a passion for telling the story of North Shields and its Fish Quay and for helping others to understand and enjoy our amazing coastal area and its wildlife.

Since 2015 we have become a thriving community hub. We have brought life back to the oldest surviving building on the Fish Quay and have welcomed well over 160,000 visitors through our doors. 

We have now put on hold a great programme of exhibitions and events. An immediate highlight was to be celebrations marking the fifth anniversary of our official opening on 26 March 2020. We had a fabulous exhibition planned showing what we have achieved over five years with images from some of the 220 community events and 27 exhibitions we have delivered.

With the financial support pledged by the Government, if we’re successful with this fund raising, we should be able to pay our running costs during this difficult period, so that we can re-open very quickly when it is possible to do so.
