We’re Womblers, a Community Interest Company with a simple yet powerful goal: to clean up and care for our communities and planet. We’re passionate about taking real action against waste by establishing sustainable, community-centered solutions. Right now, we need your help to tackle one of the fastest-growing types of waste worldwide—electronic waste (e-waste).
Why E-Waste Collection Matters
Globally, we generate over 53 million metric tons of e-waste each year—and only 17% of it is formally recycled. That leaves millions of tons of electronic waste, from old phones to broken appliances, heading straight to landfills, where it releases toxic materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium into our soil and water. These pollutants harm wildlife, poison water supplies, and affect community health.
In the UK alone, households generate around 1.5 million tonnes of e-waste every year, much of which is recyclable. But without convenient, accessible ways to recycle electronics, too much of it ends up in landfills. E-waste contains valuable metals like gold, copper, and aluminum—resources that could be recovered and reused, reducing the need for environmentally damaging mining operations. For every million mobile phones we recycle, for example, we can recover 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, and 75 pounds of gold. But to recover these resources, we need to make it easier for people to recycle their electronics responsibly.
Our Plan: Community E-Waste Drop-Off Bins
To tackle this pressing issue, Womblers wants to place e-waste drop-off bins in supermarket car parks and community spaces across towns and cities. These bins would provide a convenient way for people to responsibly dispose of their unwanted electronics, knowing they’ll be recycled properly.
But we can’t do this alone. Each bin costs money to design, place, and maintain. We’re asking for your support to help cover these costs and make this vision a reality. Every pound raised will go directly toward purchasing, installing, and maintaining these e-waste bins, as well as ensuring the responsible recycling of collected items.
