Aim

Help us bring Super Nature to life - a new café and bar for music sharing opening in Bristol.

We have secured the lease for our space on Stokes Croft, in the site of what previously was ‘The Social,’ but we need your help getting our renovations finished so that we can open this Autumn.

  • This is a campaign to help support us in the creation of this new space. All funds raised will go towards the materials and final works we need to carry out to finish our build.
  • We have some great rewards in return for your support - including Super Nature merchandise, Disk Frisk mystery record bags, production lessons with 1-800 Girls, exclusive venue hire, vouchers for The Lido Townhouse, Caper & Cure and much more.
  • This is an independent project. We have many years of experience working in hospitality and music venues in Bristol, but now we want to create something new, and accessible for a wider audience to enjoy
  • Many venues & bars have closed since Covid - Bristol needs more community led spaces and this is an opportunity for us to launch a new space for music in our city!

What are we doing?

We’ve taken over the building that for 14 years was ‘The Social' on Stokes Croft. We have been working hard to give the building some love, and are currently deep in the build, transforming the space into Super Nature. This project is self funded and we’re doing as much of the work ourselves as possible, and we are getting close now to opening our doors.

We  started Super Nature because we felt that there was a gap in Bristol for a music focused space that wasn't quite a music venue, but is more than a bar playing music - where people can regularly come to share music and discover sounds, without having to commit to late nights or buying tickets.

What will we offer ?

During the day, Super Nature will function as a cafe and record shop, as a place for people to relax, work or shop - whilst offering great coffees, teas, pastries and juices, and food from pop up kitchens. We will be partnering with local record seller Disk Frisk, and will be creating a space for them to offer their curated selection of vinyl. Super Nature will be a community space that is accessible for all - from those in the local area looking to get their lunch, to freelancers and creatives looking for a space to work on their latest projects, to people ready to dig for their next favourite record.

Then in the evenings Super Nature will naturally transition into more of a bar atmosphere with music at the heart of the venue, powered by a high fidelity sound system that sounds great at low volumes. Rather than physical music sharing only existing at traditional club nights through DJ sets, or in your friends living room, Super Nature will create a place for people to really share their home listening records, b sides or what they may listen to, with the music community in Bristol. Our programme will bring together DJs, record collectors, musicians, music lovers from different generations, and curators from all corners of Bristol and beyond. There’ll be no pressure to dance or to create a dance floor. You can sit, listen, talk, discover some music and even have time to go onto an amazing Bristol club afterwards.

We also will offer food - and our kitchen will host pop up residencies from local food brands - plus we will run supper clubs once a month where we can work with up and coming chefs and newer businesses who can showcase their food through one off events.

Who are we?

Super Nature has grown out of years spent working in music, hospitality, record shops, venues and Bristol’s independent music community. We want to build something that contributes to what already makes this city special: a welcoming physical space where people can come together over music in a casual and relaxed environment.

Music discovery has always been a big part of both our lives, whether through our work or simply sharing music with friends. Grassroots music and the independent spaces that support it are really important to us, and we’ve both seen first hand how valuable these spaces are for bringing people together - giving artists and new ideas somewhere to grow, and keeping local music communities interesting and diverse.

What have we done so far?

After four years of planning, followed by 6 months of conversations and negotiations, we finally have received the keys to the building. Since then we’ve been deep in the build for the last two months, and have been transforming the space with the help of our friends and volunteers, putting in all of our time, energy and money into the project.

So far we have:

  • Signed the lease and completed on the space
  • Begun the licensing transfer process
  • Put our life savings into the project, investing personally to get Super Nature off the ground
  • Knocked down the old bar and begun restructuring and rebuilding the new one
  • Cleared out broken furniture and equipment left behind, including ovens, chairs, fridges and freezers
  • Commissioned our sound system, which is currently being custom built for the space
  • Commissioned our custom DJ booth, which is also currently being built locally by our friends in Underfall Yard
  • Started painting and decorating, beginning to transform the interior and give the space its new identity
  • Completed some urgent repairs and improvements to the building

How will your funds help?

Although we’ve made really good progress with the building and transforming the space, there’s still a lot of essential work to complete before we can open our doors this autumn - but some of the remaining jobs require specialist trades, equipment and materials.

The funding will help us with:

  • Additional repairs to the building – The plumbing and part of the kitchen need attention before we can safely open
  • Electrical work – completing the new electrics needed for the bar, music setup and wider venue.
  • Accessibility improvements – making the venue as accessible and welcoming as we can from the outset.
  • Toilet improvements – replacing and fitting new features and improving the existing facilities.
  • Acoustic treatment – treating the space to improve sound quality and help minimise noise travelling outside the venue
  • Replacing broken furniture – much of what we inherited is damaged or unusable, so we need new seating and tables to make the space comfortable.
  • Staff training – giving our new team the training and support they need before we open.

We have set our initial target at £25,000, but if we were lucky enough to exceed our target, all extra funds will go towards improvements that we havent marked as essential to open, but that we would do as soon as we are able, things like:

  • Security of the space - We would like to install shutters to protect our windows and frontage
  • Replacing broken Kitchen equipment
