Week 3 update - still on a roll!!

It has been another very exciting week for the Feminist Library team on Crowdfunder! We have reached 60% of our target by now, so we are right on track to reach our total target. In fact, if we keep going at this rate, we may be able to cover the total of our move costs through crowdfunding - which would mean we could start all the works almost as soon as the campaign is finished - and build our dream Library by Spring 2019!

We would like to take this opportunity to extend another massive thank you to everyone who has supported us, helped us spread the word, and anyone who covered our story, in their blog, paper or magazine. Every little like and share helps!

In this third week of our crowdfunding campaign, our story was covered by Time Out, Resonance FM, Stylist magazine (yes, again! This time, one of our new space designers was profiled as their Woman of the Week, and she talked about our project a lot!), and in a really lovely blog post on Herstory Diary. We were also on the Women’s Radio Station every day that week from 2:30pm, and in fact they loved us so much that they've decided to give us another week! So we're going to be on at 3:30pm every day this week again!

All of our volunteers were also excited that we have received our long awaited crowdfunding flyers from Awesome Merchandise, featuring the special ‘move’ dragon logo by graphic designer Eva Megias - so much so that half of them have gone within the first few days! Anyone who wants to help us spread the word further can pick some up at the Library, to take them to their local bookshop, library and community cafe.

Eva has been with us for some years now, helping enormously with the graphic side of things, including a lot of the widely recognisable graphics behind the Library! Although we’ve had many wonderfully creative volunteers on board over the years, Eva has been one of the most dedicated ones in the recent years.

Flying 'on the move' version of our dragon logo - designed by Eva Megias

We asked Eva to describe her creative process behind the new ‘on the move’ dragon logo and she said:

“The dragon is part of the Feminist Library logo. With this drawing I wanted to turn it into something more fun, engaging and active for the crowdfunder campaign. The Campaign Dragon is flying from Westminster Bridge Road to our new location in Peckham. Several library books are flying with the dragon as a joke. Moving a library is expensive and, physically, a very heavy activity. It would be great if the books could actually fly to Peckham! The dragon has our iconic tote bag with zines inside. Tote bags and other merchandising material have helped us to carry on spreading the love of feminism, so I had to include this. The background of the image is abstract. Initially I drew the London skyline, but I removed it. I wanted the image to be international, to connect to other feminist libraries around the world.”

In fact, the story of the original dragon logo is a fascinating one - did you know that, according to mythology, dragons were female?! And once upon a time, were a symbol of matriarchy?! - and that one had also been designed by a former volunteer. Read more about our herstory, and find out why we have a dragon in our logo and more here

We are extremely grateful to Eva, and all the other incredible artists, writers and creative volunteers who have supported us by donating their amazing works, skills and time to our crowdfunding campaign - keep an eye out for more details on the others, coming soon here.

Please continue to help us spread the word - we still have some 40% to go in order to cover our crowdfunding target, or more than 140% to cover the full costs of the move. The Feminist Library team believes that, together ,with the help of our dedicated volunteers, and tons of amazing friends and supporters, we can definitely get there by the end of this campaign!
