Help the Feminist Library build its new home

We are off to an amazing start! Over £9,000 in the first week of the crowdfunding campaign is an incredible achievement. And in real terms, it means that we have already raised enough to build gorgeous shelving for the new space!

We are so grateful to everyone who has donated, shared and helped us spread the word about the campaign. It is the most amazing feeling for the team to see just how many people support and care about the Feminist Library.

In the last week, we’ve also got a few other exciting things happen! We already had quite extensive press coverage – we had articles in the Morning Star, London Live, The Bookseller and Stylist magazine – and we are expecting a few more. Keep an eye out in the Evening Standard next week: we’re not sure which day yet, but we are due to be in there!

In even more great news, 3 more artists have decided to donate their work to add to the amazing rewards that we’ve already got on our crowdfunding page! We are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated their time, money and work to make the success of our campaign surpass our expectations from the beginning.

We have already added Shannon Bono’s piece ‘Ain’t I a Woman’ to our Crowdfunder page’s rewards and will be adding more, and posting updates on the other artists who have supported us by donating their work, soon. We thought that Shannon piece was an excellent one to focus on to start with not just because we love it so much, but because it is a nod to the inspirational figure of Sojourner Truth, who is also the woman whose name the community centre that we’re moving to carries!  

Shannon says about her creative practice: ‘As a young black woman my art practice is reflective of personal queries and experiences surrounding the issues of gender roles, sexuality, spirituality, beauty standards and race relations.'; and about the piece: 'An ode to Sojourner Truth’s popular speech addressing the issues of female inequality and race. As a political statement Truth disrobed amongst an all-white jury baring her breasts as evidence of her woman hood and to declare that her race does not affect this fact. Dismantling these female black bodies and manipulating them epitomizes the behaviour in popular culture and post-colonisation. This piece is a direct reference to the erotic and political power of the female nude image.'
