Our aim is to raise £35k to support the Community Bakery during a very challenging time of temporary closure resulting from fire.
On Monday 23 February 2026, fire broke out at Dunbar Community Bakery, a true heart-and-soul hub on our High Street and a cherished part of life in Dunbar. Emergency services responded swiftly and heroically - thanks to quick action by staff and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, there were no injuries, and damage to the street was kept under control.
However, the rear of the bakery and kitchen suffered significant fire and water damage, and the building is currently unable to operate. The blaze started in the roof as a result of work by an external contractor - meaning insurance claims are likely to be complex and prolonged.
While the bakery is closed for repairs, it still faces ongoing bills, wages for staff, utilities and maintenance costs, all with no trading income.
This isn’t just a shop. Since it opened in 2011, the bakery has been an award-winning cornerstone of the community, bringing fresh bread, cakes and warm welcomes to locals, visitors, and workers alike. It was started by local people and remains community-owned and staffed, supporting local jobs and apprenticeships, and helping regenerate our High Street.
Why We Need Your Help
Today we are asking for your support so we can:
Rebuild and repair the kitchen and bakery space
Keep our dedicated staff employed
Cover essential upfront costs while we wait for insurance
Ensure this community asset can open its doors again soon
Whether you give £5 or £500 - every contribution helps keep our bakery alive and thriving. Your donation isn’t just support for a business: it’s support for a gathering place, a local employer, and a part of Dunbar’s soul.
Please donate and share - together we can bring back the smell of fresh bread to our High Street and safeguard our community space for generations to come.
With gratitude,
Friends & Members of Dunbar Community Bakery
