The Problem: The "Hidden" Crisis in Pet Reunification
Imagine your dog or cat goes missing. A kind stranger finds them and takes them to a vet. The vet scans for a microchip and they find one! But then comes the heart breaking news: "The chip is not registered on a microchip database in the UK”.
So, what does that mean?
Simply you are untraceable, so if you cannot be found then where does your pet end up. That you do not want to consider
In the UK, there are over 20 different microchip databases and yes they all talk to each other, but that’s not enough. If an owner forgets or does not register their pet, that 15-digit number is useless, because it will not be on any database. It’s a permanent electronic ID that leads to nowhere.
We call these “Blank Chips”
Every year, thousands of pets are stuck in shelters simply because no one can trace who implanted their microchip.
Over 30% of all microchips in pets are not registered on a database. Thats over 300,000 pets with no means of identity.
The Solution: The Lost Paws Traceability Link
Lost Paws already registers pet microchips for free on our complaint DEFRA approved database and we want to continue to do this for free, but make it better. We want to build the first the UK’s National Implantation Ledger that can find these Blank Chips
We aren't just another database; we want to be the "safety net" for all of them. The technology we want to build will work behind the scenes with veterinary surgery software to record which veterinary practice implanted a chip the moment it happens and at the same time it will search the other database to see if has been registered.
- If the owner registers the chip: Great! The system works as intended.
- If the owner does not register the chip: Lost Paws software will let the vet or implanter know that that chip has not been registered and if it is never registered but scanned, it will let that person who did the scan know who and where the microchip was implanted.
- Traceability: From chip supplier to the implanter to the pet. It will be the first AI technology to do so
