The Breastfeeding Boat (East-London) supports mothers with free information, expertise and peer support, as breastfeeding can be difficult!
Current situation
Only 1% of mothers in the UK breastfeeds their baby exclusively for the first 6 months, and almost no-one up to 2 years (as recommended by the WHO). Source: GOV UK. Research shows that peer support is most effective when it comes to the promotion of breastfeeding. At the moment breastfeeding support is mostly done by NHS health care professionals who can be overloaded with cases and don't always have the knowledge or time to support the new mother.
The Breastfeeding Boat
The Breastfeeding Boat is a new initiative and supports mothers in any age group. Support is especially important for young mothers (under 30 years old), as they tend to breastfeed less frequently and less long. The boat will be accessible on different places on the Regent's canal between Angel, Islington and Victoria Park (mothers tend to walk on the towpath with their babies to get them to sleep).

Mental Health Support
As a certified psychologist (registered with the British Psychology Society), my aim is to also provide mental health support for new mothers as well. Therefore I will also offer 1:1 therapy sessions (paid only) for mothers.
Long-term success
When the boat is a success, every day mothers will be supported in their journey to breastfeed for longer. Focusing on the benefits of breastfeeding raises the awareness and knowledge of new mums. Ultimately, more breastfeeding saves the economy money, and there will also be less waste in the world.

About Renate
I have a Master's in Psychology from the University of East London and did my dissertation research on breastfeeding. I have diplomas in Post Natal Care and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. After two difficult c-sections, I struggled breastfeeding but with the right support I breastfed my two children for 5 years in total. Besides the boat, I volunteer with the NHS as a breastfeeding helper in Tower Hamlets.
Built by Her campaign
This crowdfunding project is part of the Built by Her campaign from Crowdfunder UK and Muddy Stilettos. Every donation is welcome: £5 or £10 already make a big difference!
Keeping a narrowboat floating is expensive: costs for mooring, license, utilities and basic maintenance come up to £350 a month. The boat is also in need of a survey (£800) and fresh coat of paint (£4,000). Any help is more than welcome!
