Aim

To help provide rural Nigerian villages with non-violent security measures to deter future bandit attacks.

Nigeria is currently facing widespread organised bandit attacks that are disrupting local communities and devastating rural farming economies. While the motivations behind these attacks remain disputed, it is undeniable that thousands of people are kidnapped and killed each year.

The bandit attacks have devastated many local farming communities across Nigeria. Farmers are often deliberately targeted because they are perceived as relatively wealthy within their regions, even though in states such as Kaduna the average monthly income for a farmer is typically less than $100.

Bandits routinely extort farmers through persistent kidnapping, looting, and intimidation. In some cases, they seize farmland and even mutilate farmers’ hands to prevent them from farming in the area. This extreme brutality has deepened poverty and contributed to rising food prices.

As a result, many villagers can no longer afford basic staples and survive on very small amounts of food each day.

New solutions are therefore needed to help communities defend themselves against bandit attacks. Our proposal is to equip villages with non-lethal defensive infrastructure, including solar-powered security lights, alarms, motion-sensor CCTV cameras, and security fencing.

Our team has already installed solar-powered security lights in villages across South Kaduna. Bandits often launch attacks at night, using darkness to approach communities undetected. By removing this element of surprise, we hope to deter future attacks and improve village security. The cost of each solar light installation, including the necessary infrastructure, is approximately £300.

Please give generously to help us give villagers in rural Nigeria a chance to live in peace.
