Aim

The next General Election could be under two years away, and I want to win the seat of Cambridge and get a fair deal for our city - Cheney

Who is Cheney Payne?

  • I have lived in Cambridge since 2007, first getting involved in politics after the 2016 Brexit Referendum. I'm a teacher and I saw how horrified the students were the day after the result, and wanted to do something to make a difference.
  • Since then I’ve been elected as a local councillor three times: winning and retaining my City Council seat in Castle Ward in 2018, 2021 and 2023.
  • I stood in the 2024 General Election in Cambridge and was the closest challenger to Labour - and can beat them here next time.

Why do we think this is possible?

  • Cambridge had two much-loved Lib Dem MPs, David Howarth and Julian Huppert, between 2005 and 2015.
  • The Lib Dems have consistently been the main opposition to Labour in Cambridge.
  • Cambridgeshire Lib Dems have momentum - taking control of the county council last year and electing 3 MPs for the constituencies surrounding the city.

Labour have held the seat since 2015 and our Labour MP increasingly puts party politics above representing our community. He has toed the party line on issues like Europe and immigration, ignoring our city's liberal values.

Labour's vote has been collapsing in Cambridge and across the city, and there is good evidence we can beat Labour at the next general election - if we raise enough money to run a winning campaign.

What do we need to do?

Winning Cambridge at the next election would be an immense achievement, and it’s going to take an incredible amount of effort

Between now and Christmas, we want to:

  • Print a magazine featuring me and my story, and why I am fighting for a fair deal for our city.
  • Send regular letters to voters in Cambridge to build my name recognition all over the city.
  • Send monthly leaflets via Royal Mail to houses across Cambridge to allow our deliverers and activists to spend more time speaking to voters and recruiting more volunteers.

This all costs money.  I’m aware that money is one of the many problems pressing down on people at this point in time, but whatever your views on different issues, I’m sure you’ll agree that things can’t carry on as they are.  We need the real change Labour have been failing to deliver.

Your help now will make all the difference

I’m sure it won’t be the last time I ask for help, but what we’ve got planned should unlock significantly more funding and resource over the coming months..  Your support now, will help set us up for success next year.

Thank you so much, in anticipation, for anything you can commit.
