Help us build the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 'Nocturnal Garden' at its permanent home in Clydach, Swansea.
Who are we, and what is our project about?
Clydach Community Gardens is a not-for-profit environmental organisation, managing a community-led green space where people and nature flourish together. Since transforming a neglected public site in 2019, we've been creating opportunities for local people to learn sustainable food-growing skills, take action on climate challenges and connect with the nature through volunteering, education and community activities.
We work with volunteers, schools, community groups, and partner organisations to not only encourage better access to nature, but to create lasting social and environmental impact, building a healthier, greener, and more resilient community for years to come.
In Spring 2025, Clydach Community Gardens became a project partner on an RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden, lead by garden designer Melanie Hick and the Bat Conservation Trust. Funded by Project Giving Back, 'The Nocturnal Garden' has been designed to demonstrate how you can create a beautiful, wildlife-friendly garden that supports bats and other nocturnal species. The design includes a diverse range of plants and trees that attract moths and pollinators as a food source for bats and highlights the importance of nature friendly green spaces.
In May 2026 the Nocturnal Garden showcased at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, winning a Silver Medal and the People's Choice award.
As the relocation partner, Clydach Community Gardens are bringing the Nocturnal Garden from Chelsea to Wales where the garden will be rebuilt in it's permanent home, in the heart of Clydach, Swansea.
This is first RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden to be relocated to South Wales and will be managed by Clydach Community Gardens as part of their existing site and ongoing work. It will be used as an education garden to engage the wider community on the importance of biodiversity and creating wildlife-friendly gardens both in public green spaces and at home.
Why are we crowdfunding?
As an inclusive organisation, we work with children and people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. We believe everybody should have access to nature and safe green spaces.
We are grateful for the support from Project Giving Back, who selected and supported the build of the Nocturnal Garden for the Chelsea Flower Show. However there are additional costs and considerations for relocating the garden and building it in its permanent home in Clydach and we need your help!
This garden will belong to the community as an educational space, and we need to ensure it is fit for everybody to use. This means making the garden as accessible and safe as possible, and adapting some of the features to make the most of how we use the garden over years to come. The site at Clydach is also larger than the original design, which means more room for bat friendly planting and space for learning!
What will the money be spent on?
- Adapting the original garden design to include wider paths, larger communal spaces and suitable materials for wheelchair users, prams and visitors with additional mobility requirements. We need to add additional features to make the garden as accessible and functional as possible including bilingual signage, seating and safety features.
- The original Nocturnal Garden at Chelsea featured plants that peak in May for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We would like to add to the original planting design by including plants that support wildlife throughout the seasons and add year-round interest to the garden. Plants will be selected from the official Bat Conservation Trust list of plants that improve biodiversity and attract moths and insects for feeding and supporting bats and other species.
- Any additional funding will kick start our education programme to run workshops, activities and sessions for the community to learn more about nature friendly gardening, increasing biodiversity and creating resilient natural habitats in our communities.
The build of the Nocturnal Garden is taking place from mid- August 2026 and will be launching to the public at a free event on Saturday 12th September 2026. To find out more visit www.clydachcommunitygardens.org
