Andy Malkinson spent 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit - but APPEAL proved his innocence. This holiday season, Andy is free and plans to spend the rest of his life exploring the world and advocating for change.
We receive hundreds of requests from prisoners just like Andy who urgently need our help.
Please make a donation today to help fund the fight for more people in the same situation that Andy was in.
APPEAL fights miscarriages of justice
We’re a legal charity dedicated to fighting miscarriages of justice. Supported by people across the country, our small team represents prisoners who are wrongfully convicted or unfairly sentenced and who cannot afford a lawyer. As well as fighting individual cases, we shine a light on the flaws in the justice system and campaign for reform.
Our victories - like in Andy’s case - mean innocent people freed, wrongful convictions overturned, families re-united and lives put back together. And the identification of mistakes that the system can learn from.
Hundreds need our help and yours.
It takes thousands of hours of work to prove that someone like Andy is innocent. Legal Aid doesn’t even begin cover it and the people we represent can’t afford to pay for a lawyer.
So they turn to us and we take on their cases for free. Our work is funded by those who share our commitment to standing up against injustice.
Your donation will go directly towards investigating and fighting cases in the courts of law and public opinion, and to helping our clients and their loved ones survive the injustice that the system has inflicted upon them.
Fight cases, change the system
The criminal justice system can and does get it wrong. Together, we can right those wrongs - with every case like Andy’s, we can expose the flaws in the system and fight for real change.
Within weeks of Andy’s win, several different official inquiries were launched to figure out what went wrong. The Prime Minister even intervened to finally abolish an absurd rule that used to force people like Andy to pay back their “saved living costs” while wrongfully imprisoned.
Andy’s case was turned down for an appeal three times. Last year, more than 98% of the people who applied to Criminal Cases Review Commission (the body that decides which cases get a second appeal) had their cases refused.
How many other people like Andy have been turned down? We will work to find out.
Going into 2024, we are determined to ensure that the lessons from Andy’s case are learned and real change is made so that other people we represent can get their day in court.
Andy is not the only one. Your donations fund the fight for people like David Pinto, convicted on circumstantial evidence but adamant he is innocent. They fund our Women's Justice Initiative, which fights for women accused of crimes in the context of domestic violence. And much more - your donations allow us to take on other cases and fight other miscarriages of justice for as long as it takes. Please support us today. Together we can fight more cases and change the system for the better.
