Helford Honeymoon is an intimate music documentary that delves into the life and creative world of musician Davey Hal, an artist whose work embodies the heart, landscape, and culture of Cornwall. Through a blend of performance, storytelling, and cinematic visuals, the film offers a portrait of a musician whose resilience and artistry have quietly defined a decade-long career.
At the centre of the documentary is Davey’s latest EP, Helford Honeymoon, a deeply personal project created which was officially endorsed by Daphne du Maurier’s son. The record draws direct inspiration from du Maurier’s most celebrated literary works as well as key moments from her own life. This creative relationship forms the emotional core of the film, intertwining Cornwall’s rich artistic legacy with Davey’s modern reinterpretation of it through his music.
The film will be made up of three core elements. Firstly, a series of in-depth interviews with Davey and his closest collaborators, giving audiences an honest glimpse into his songwriting process, his inspirations, and the challenges of pursuing art outside of the mainstream. These candid conversations reveal a man whose creative fire has endured despite limited commercial success, driven by an unwavering connection to his craft and his community.
Secondly, the documentary will feature a live performance, filmed in front of an audience using a four-camera setup to capture every nuance of his sound and stage presence. This section will highlight Davey’s unique ability to connect with listeners, a moment where the emotion of his songwriting comes alive.
Finally, the film will include a series of stylised, cinematic performances, staged at multiple locations across Cornwall. Each setting has been carefully chosen for its visual and cultural significance, reflecting the themes of his songs and grounding the story in the Cornish landscape that inspires his work.
Each song will act as a chapter in the film’s narrative, with interviews and visuals bridging the gaps between performances, gradually piecing together the story of Davey’s artistic journey. At its heart, Helford Honeymoon is a love letter to music, creativity, and Cornwall itself, a film that celebrates not only a talented musician, but the enduring spirit of artistic passion in one of Britain’s most culturally rich regions.
