To ensure the recovery and educational support my boys are receiving continues after school trauma and SEND neglect.
Our two neurodiverse boys have been failed again and again by the current education system. E is 9, autistic and has complicated OCD and sensory processing difficulties. J is 7, is going through the ADHD diagnosis process, struggles significantly to regulate and has sensory seeking difficulties.
After years of school trauma, failed EHCP and no real support, we’re now finding our own way. We’re raising £5000 to fund 5 months of one-to-one SEND provision so our boys can finally learn, heal and feel safe. Each year this care costs us personally as a family £12,000.
EHCP’s (Educational Health Care Plans) are normally put forward by schools and paid for by the local authority to ensure any additional needs that limit access to education for a child might be met in other ways.
The countries current Special Educational Needs Crisis means thousands of children like mine are not being given what they need to access education and learning in a safe and nurturing environment.
For some children that is specialist school placements for others that is education in alternative provisions classed as Education Other Than At School.
After years of school trauma, having the needs of our children not only unmet but ignored we were forced to remove them from school and support them using our own means and provision.
The One-to-One provision we have in place is with a SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) and trauma informed Therapeutic Support Worker with over 20 years experience. The boys have been with this worker for the two years since they left school and have built an incredible bond that has brought them so much healing and recovery already. Healing for neurodivergent children especially, isn’t linear and it takes time.
The boys receive 12 hours of 1:2:1 support a week at around £20.50 an hour. In those 12 hours they visit museums, botanic gardens in the summer, libraries, work on projects and work through emotions and difficulties that come up throughout the days and weeks through play, talking, arts and Lego.
For two years we have been sacrificing, time health and our own personal wellbeing and finances to try and fund this lifeline of support but long term this is unsustainable. With each new month that comes we can’t guarantee the finances anymore. This cost legally falls to the responsibility of the local authority but the fight to get this is a long one.
As a family we are trying to grow our businesses and self employment whilst living in the trenches of trying to support two children suffering collectively with an inability to sleep, anxiety, sensory processing difficulties , OCD, and long periods of agoraphobia.
While we carry on the battle of getting the local authority for support and provision through an EHCP we are reaching out for financial support to keep in place the provisions we have worked so hard to put in place.
As an artist I see this as a great opportunity to use my art as a force for good and I want to gift donors with some prints of my artwork.
Depending on what you gift us we will send you a randomly selected print. A personal, heartfelt thank you for your kindness.
Whilst respecting and maintaining my children’s privacy I will be sharing updates on the campaign and their progress on my social media pages.
