Ukraine International Convoy Kid's Minibus Appeal

Aim

Delivering aid and solidarity to Ukrainian civil society to survive the winter freezing temperatures amidst power cuts and bombing.

A parent reading by phone-light, a child unable to do homework - that’s what the coming months of power cuts mean for millions of Ukrainians. Help us help them survive the outages and to enable children enjoy a trade union-run summer camp.

This winter the Ukrainian people will, for the fifth time, face the terrible prospect of another winter at war. Ukrainian civilians are currently defenceless against Russia’s illegal ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, which attack them day and night. 

The Ukrainian people survive and resist.

Despite everything, the Ukrainian people continue to show their defiance, both on the front line against Russian aggression and on the streets against government corruption. They continue to defend their sovereignty and their democracy, while insisting that international law must be applied in practice.

Last winter, solidarity campaigns organised by European and international civil society organisations helped Ukraine endure. This year, even greater, better coordinated and more visible solidarity will be needed. 

The Convoy 

In November Ukraine supporters from across Europe are organising a convoy carrying aid on three routes converging from Barcelona, Oslo and Edinburgh. They will be holding meetings hosted by national campaigns including in Geneva, the European Parliament Strasbourg, Brussels, Berlin, Warsaw, Lviv and Kyiv. 

Our contribution to the convoy is a minibus carrying power bank generators and other humanitarian aid. The power banks will ward off the cold and the dark during power cuts. They will also enable children to charge tablets with schoolwork, families to keep phones running to hear missile alerts.  The minibus will later be used to transport children to and from a children’s summer camp outside Kyiv, that the one-million-member Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine (TUESWU) is building. Support for this project is already underway from the National Education Union in England and Wales.  The camp has an emergency shelter to protect users against air strikes and shelling, and to ensure children can continue to learn in safety.
