Aim

Expanding our services to be able to provide Therapeutic Support to families affected by Terminal Illness

Gunners Kids CIC was founded in response to the lack of understanding and support available for families experiencing anticipatory grief. We support families with children when a parent, carer, or close family member has a terminal illness, providing support boxes, activity days, information sessions, outreach services, school support, and drop in sessions. Every aspect of our work is designed to help families feel less alone during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

This project will strengthen the support we can offer by including counselling services as part of our offer. This will allow us to provide structured, person centred therapeutic support alongside our existing peer support and listening ear services.

Access to counselling is increasingly difficult. Many services have long waiting lists, leaving families waiting months for help or feeling they have no option but to pay for private therapy. For the families we support, time is incredibly precious. They may not know how long they have left with their loved one, and the uncertainty, fear, and emotional strain of anticipatory grief can quickly become overwhelming. Unfortunately, there are very few counselling services specifically designed for people facing this experience.

Our aim is to ensure that no family has to face anticipatory grief without timely, compassionate support because of financial barriers or lengthy waiting lists. By investing in specialist counselling skills within our organisation, we will be able to provide immediate therapeutic support when it is needed most. We also plan to build a team of trained practitioners so that more families across the county can access this vital service.

Funding for this project will enable Gunners Kids CIC to expand our impact, reach more families, and provide specialist emotional support at the point when it can make the greatest difference. By combining professional counselling with the trust and understanding built through our existing services, we will help children and families feel heard, supported, and better equipped to cope with the challenges of living with terminal illness and anticipatory grief.

3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!

4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
