The Guild of Players was formed, as noted in the minutes of an early meeting, ‘to promote an improvement in the public attitude towards, and taste for, the drama, by means of plays of outstanding merit, by lectures, readings, and in any other way which might commend itself to the Directors.’
Keep Our Story Alive! Since 1913, the Guild of Players has been a cornerstone of Dumfries' cultural life. From humble beginnings in school halls to our permanent home at the Theatre Royal, we’ve been bringing the community together through live theatre for over a century. As owners and custodians of Scotland’s oldest working theatre, the Guild of Players is responsible for looking after this architecturally and culturally important category B listed Georgian theatre.
Today, we continue this legacy with three seasonal productions, a festive Christmas Pantomime, and the Guild of Players Youth Theatre, nurturing the next generation of performers.
