Back our biggest General Election campaign to date! Help us reach every letterbox across two constituencies! Support our Green MP candidates

by Fiona Radic in Peterborough, England, United Kingdom

Nicola Day and Joseph Wells will stand for Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire and Peterborough on behalf of the Green Party when the next General Election is called.

Each candidate needs to raise £500 for their deposit, and a further £500 to cover the cost of campaign materials, such as printed leaflets.

Nicola Day

Nicola Day was elected to Peterborough City Council to represent Orton Waterville in May 2019. Since then she has helped ensure that the council declared a Climate Emergency.

Nicola grew up in Orton Goldhay, where her dad delivered a milk round for 20 years, and went to what is now Ormiston Bushfield Academy before later attending Peterborough Regional College and then Sheffield and Cambridge Universities. She qualified as a Teacher of English in 2004 and teaches in local secondary schools.

Nicola believes that in the wake of the current climate crisis more strong Green voices are needed at Westminster. 'The recent IPCC report has proved to us, beyond all doubt that we must act quickly to prevent a climate catastrophe. Green representation is urgently needed at national government levels to ensure we protect our planet and create a sustainable future for generations to come.'

Nicola has campaigned for social justice and dedicates her time every week to campaigning in the North West Cambridgeshire Constituency. 'Every week I am out and about speaking to residents, working hard and being proactive and visible. As a Green MP I would seek to represent a variety of communities. I want to ensure all residents live in a safe, clean and caring community.'

Nicola also believes firmly in the Green Party's post - growth agenda. 'It is quite clear that economic growth is a poor guide to human welfare. What we need to be doing is not focusing on growth, but on sharing the resources we already have more equally. What wealth there is must be shared in such a way that everyone has a guarantee of economic security, otherwise people will not heed ecological restraints in their daily lives.'

Joseph Wells

Joseph Wells stood for Peterborough in the 2019 Byelection caused by the first ever successful Recall Petition in the UK.

Joseph says: “I’ve lived in Peterborough my whole life, been educated at Peterborough schools and I work for a Peterborough business. I have seen how Peterborough has been repeatedly let down by its representatives in Westminster and I recognise the urgent need for change, and for a credible voice for our voters. “I believe I will provide a strong voice for our city and ensure that everyone feels represented. As climate change continues to pose a dire threat to the planet we are in desperate need of representatives who will look to the future. Not just as far as the next election, but 25 years down the line to the next generation. “A vote for the Green Party is a vote for protecting our people, our environment and our future.”
