Aim: Narcissistic baker Gran learns that if anyone at her funeral resents her, she and her cupcakes will burn in Hell forever.
Gran, a recently deceased, narcissistic baker is stuck in a lift trying to get to Heaven.
After being informed that she'll be sent to Hell if anyone at her funeral resents her, she witnesses (through a window to the living world), her granddaughter, Charlotte, purposefully crushing one of her beloved cupcakes.
Enraged, Gran forces her way back to her own funeral, but accidentally exposes Charlotte's deep rooted hatred for Gran's baked goods, and things only spiral from there.
The unique (and tricky) element of the film is its black comedy tone. When giving a quick summary of the film, the words: funeral, cupcakes, abuse, death and Heaven can be used all in the one breath… That's quite a breath!
The production design, costume design and make-up are all aiming to exaggerate reality: the funeral flower arrangements will be big and extravagant, the costumes flamboyant and fashionable, and the make-up dramatic. We want to construct Gran and Charlotte's dark and ridiculous world.
Our camera and lighting team are working to create the depressing world of the funeral: built of grey, dark tones which also facilitates the comedic acting of our cast using high key, comedy lighting. These tones will contrast Gran's sickly sweet, pink colour palette.
Where's my money going? Well, take a look below how we've divvied up the slices.
LYRA FEWINS
Hi, I'm Lyra, the Writer-Director of Gran's Ghost. My favourite cake is chocolate cake!! After leaving AUB I'm hoping to work as a screenwriter; having the opportunity to bring a story I've written to life is a dream come true.
JAMIE WINSLOW
Hello! I'm Jamie, the Producer of Gran's Ghost. If I had to choose, my favourite flavour of cake would be lemon drizzle. The goal for me is to become a respected independent film producer. Having produced several smaller productions, this will be my first short film on a larger scale and therefore a big step towards that goal.
HARRY CURTIS
I’m Harry and I’m the Co-producer, my favourite cake is a simple chocolate cake. I’m hoping to go into producing and marketing film after uni. So taking control of the social media account for Gran's Ghost will be a great experience in how to effectively build an audience.
SUDIARDI SUDYONO
Hi I am Sudiardi, Director of Photography for Gran's Ghost. I hate cakes. Birthday cakes included. I had been working as a spark for a couple of years in Singapore before I came to Arts University Bournemouth. As I wanted to challenge myself creatively to enhance my learning experience, being a Director of Photography allows me to do just that by collaborating with other departments and pushing myself to the limits. It's an honour to be part of this project with fantastic crew members.
JEFF YEUNG
Hi, I am Jeff, the Gaffer for Gran’s Ghost. I hope to gain more experience and slowly work my way up to being a cinematographer in the future! Yeah, I like tiramisu cupcakes as well.
JUDE HOLLIS
My name is Jude and I'm the Camera Operator for Gran's Ghost. My favourite cake is flavour is chocolate. After I'm finished at AUB, I'd love to get experience in the camera department as a trainee and eventually work up the ladder to operating. With this film, it's an amazing opportunity for me to develop my skills and add to my showreel. I'm really confident in the crew we have and can't wait to start shooting!
HÖDDI CLAUSEN
Hi, I'm Höddi Clausen and I'm the Sound Designer. Bailey's Cake is my favourite. I'm excited to keep exploring film as a medium for heartfelt storytelling and subverting expectations. I believe Gran's Ghost will provide audiences with both!
HAYDON ANDERSON
I'm Haydon, and I'm the greatest sound person. My favourite cake flavour is carrot. As boom operator I’m gonna be doing a lot. Holding the boom here. Over there. In that corner. Up the stairs. Over the balcony. But getting clean dialogue is very important to sell the comedy of the film, like how are the jokes gonna land if you can’t hear them?
TOBY MUIR
I'm Toby Muir, the Production Designer for Gran's Ghost. Pineapple upside-down Cake is the one for me. In the future, I aspire to be a Graphic Designer/Production Designer and Gran’s Ghost will help me towards that because it has such a distinct aesthetic that would challenge my skills as a Production Designer and push me into a new perspective of visual arts.
ERFAN TAVAKOL
My name is Erfan Tavakol, the Editor and Colourist of Gran's Ghost. My long-term goals are to make a mark for myself in the music industry as a director and editor of music videos so that I can later branch out and work on feature films and commercials for the big screen. The opportunity to learn and expand my skills while working on this film with a talented crew will help me advance my knowledge in preparation for a career in the film industry. A cake flavour that’s a personal favourite of mine is red velvet.
MIA GAULTON
Hi, I'm Mia Gaulton and I'm the Hair and Makeup Designer and Supervisor. My favourite cake is lemon drizzle. My dream has always been to work in the West End as a wiggy and MUA, and then transition into the world of TV and Film as an artist. This film is inspired heavily by the theatrical and exaggerated style which relates to all departments. Therefore, it allows me to work on something that involves elements of both career aspirations.
Large or little, the donation you give helps us to make this film the best it can be. With your support, we will have the means to work with professional actors, inspiring locations, and all the appropriate cladding. Pretty vital stuff to pull off a comedy set at a funeral in high society...
Although our primary intention is to entertain, the film also aims to show the humour in dark moments; how ridiculous and hilarious occasions like funerals can be; how important it is to laugh as well as cry. A message worth sharing, we feel.
Of course, money is not by any stretch the only way you can support this project. Why not follow and engage with us on Instagram, share this page or tell a friend (or two!). Every small action helps, and we are forever grateful to everyone who takes one to support us.
