The project aims to provide a community growing space focused on edible and useful plants which will be located in Grangewood Park
The Friends of Grangewood Park committee are excited to be raising money to get the Grangewood Park Edible Garden started. We need £1500 to create three raised beds with planting and to add two benches to this area.
Grangewood Park Edible Gardens – Our Aims
The Grangewood Park Edible Gardens began life in September 2020, with the aim of:
The edible plants will be mainly perennial fruits and herbs. The Grangewood Park Edible Gardens are part of Community Harvest, an initiative with Capital Growth, which will help us gather a harvest to support the South Norwood Community Kitchen. We will also look at other ways to harvest and share the produce of our plants as well as ways to assist others into growing their own food.

The sunken garden has empty beds and could do with some planting to improve the appearance of the space.
We want this space to have an educational element so we hope that through volunteering sessions and workshops we can use the space to talk about growing food, looking after plants, cooking and preserving.

Between September and December, we have had 22 volunteering sessions to clear the sunken garden space and maintain the park’s paths. We have had 46 different volunteers attending so far. We have an Instagram account and Facebook account – both with over 100 members – with both sites continuing to grow. Work has currently stopped due to lockdown restrictions but we hope to be back out in the park as soon as we can.

The two benches which will be added to the space are being purchased to remember Alderman Adrian Dennis, who was a Thornton Heath ward councillor and those residents we lost during Covid-19. The funding for the benches is from Community Ward budget funding from Cllr Karen Jewitt and Pat Clouder applied for by Friends of Grangewood Park committee and money raised here is to cover the cost of installation.
We expect this project to grow and evolve with the input of the local community. We will encourage ongoing conversations about how we make this space work for all park users. We would love you to be a part of it, whether that is as a volunteer, a learner, a financial supporter, a cheerleader or someone who spreads the word about this project.

What your support will buy
We will be buying three raised beds, which will be built by local company Crystal Pallets who have kindly given us a discount.
We will be getting soil and plants to grow in the space.
We will be having two new benches added to the space.
Any additional funds raised will be used for tools, signage, workshops and extra planting in the space.
