Aim

Help restore Torr Vale Mill’s iconic chimney – a proud symbol of British history. Support preserving this landmark for future generations

About Us & Our Vision

We are the fifth custodians of Torr Vale Mill, a Grade II* listed treasure in New Mills, Derbyshire. As the first female owner and a local family, we feel a deep sense of responsibility for safeguarding this nationally significant site. Every penny generated through weddings, events, sales, and tenancies is reinvested directly back into the mill, ensuring its preservation and future growth.

Our vision is to protect Torr Vale Mill not just as a historic landmark, but as a living, thriving hub for the community. We are committed to making the site accessible and inclusive, while promoting heritage, education, tourism, and creativity. By restoring and maintaining its iconic features—most urgently, the chimney—we aim to secure the mill’s legacy for future generations while creating opportunities that benefit both local people and visitors from further afield.

Why the Chimney Matters

The mill’s iconic chimney is integral to its identity and history. One of only six surviving in Northwest Derbyshire, it is vital to demonstrating the evolution of the cotton industry and to maintaining the Grade II* listing of Torr Vale Mill. It is also a landmark that draws visitors, guiding them to this hidden gem at the heart of our community.

The Project

The funds we raise will be used to:

  • Repair the chimney’s structure, including loose stonework and repointing
  • Improve access and ventilation
  • Install a lightning protection system
  • Ensure the chimney’s longevity for future generations

These works are essential not only for the safety and preservation of the chimney but also to strengthen the mill’s role as a recognised heritage destination.

Our Impact

Torr Vale Mill already hosts a thriving mix of uses—a bistro bar, event space, commercial units, retail outlets, and holiday accommodation—while also welcoming walkers, heritage tourists, schools, and community groups. Our growing programme of guided tours, school visits, and workshops highlights the mill’s importance as one of the most accessible preserved cotton mills, showcasing the full journey of the Industrial Revolution.

The regeneration of Torr Vale Mill is closely aligned with community regeneration goals: boosting tourism, supporting creative industries, and creating inclusive spaces for people to learn, work, and connect. By securing the chimney’s future, we strengthen the mill’s position as a hub of heritage, education, and local economic growth—while preserving an irreplaceable piece of British history.
