Aim

Increase the parking provision for Gowerton Athletic Club to; i. Increase safety. ii. Reduce problems for local residents.

Who are we?

We are Gowerton Athletic Club, the Bowls, Cricket and Rugby Clubs that occupy the site on Victoria Road, Gowerton.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We are a community sports club whose stated aim is;

The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation for the public benefit in Gowerton and the surrounding area by the provision of facilities to allow participation in amateur sport such as Rugby, Bowls and Cricket and other sports as appropriate’.

All three clubs have attracted more members from our local community and numbers have increased significantly in the last 10 years. Car parking onsite is woefully inadequate and accessing the Athletic Ground is a significant and increasing hazard for both pedestrians and motorists crossing Victoria Road, particularly by the Railway Bridge at the main entrance.

The lack of available car parking in the area means that parking in and around Fairwood Terrace by those using the Athletic Ground provides problems for residents living nearby.

If we were able to increase the parking provision on the northern side of Victoria Road, it would significantly reduce the number of people having to cross the road and at the same time alleviate many of the issues for residents.

The proposal is to change the use of an area of 1.01 acres of land between the river and the entrance to the Golf range into an area of car parking with a permeable surface for approximately 80-100 cars.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Thanks to the support of our two local County Councillors Dai Jenkins and Sue Jones, we've applied to the City and County of Swansea's Community Investment Fund who've provisionally approved our application and will provide 70% of the costs of the conversion.

We, with the support of Councillors Jenkins and Jones need to provide the other 30%. The Crowdfunding campaign will be boosted by an additional donation of £15,000 from the Sport Wales 'A place for Sport' fund if we achieve our target of raising £12,500 and get 75 unique supporters.

Community impact

The Athletic Club plays a key role in supporting our community.

It provides an opportunity for members to play bowls, cricket and rugby. Those members cover all ages from 5 years of age to the veterans teams in all three clubs.

Both the cricket and rugby club have teams for girls and women across all ages.
