We are crowdfunding to support the development of a Community Cinema in our neighbourhood of Govanhill, Glasgow
by GAMIS in Glasgow, , United Kingdom
On the 21st April 2023 we'd raised £12,202 with 216 supporters in 32 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
This new stretch target will help us buy a new projector, an Ipad to manage the box office and support outreach and, most importantly, we will be able to buy a POPCORN MACHINE!
Thank you everyone who has supported this project so far! Now that we have reached our initial target, Creative Scotland will no longer match your donations - but we still very much welcome your pledges of support! Our new stretch target of £12K will support the purchase of more equipment, helping us make film events more accessible and fun.
Glasgow Artists' Moving Image Studios (GAMIS) are a new organisation committed to supporting experimental and community-focused film programming in Govanhill. Our vision is to develop dedicated screening facilities, workspaces and professional support for artists working in moving image and other time-based practices. Our ultimate goal is to create a space that is used and loved by all parts of our local community, using film to share stories about ourselves with each other.

We have been programming cinema and supporting artists and filmmakers in Govanhill and wider Glasgow since 2018. We started with the ambition of reopening the historic Govanhill Picture House, and during the Covid lockdowns we built a temporary outdoor cinema next door.
We run cinema screenings, workshops, and festival events, as well as supporting artists and community groups to develop their own creative projects locally and internationally.
We are now working to develop new premises at the former Phoenix Furniture warehouse on Niddrie Road. We were lucky enough to be able to use it under temporary licence in August 2022 for the Govanhill Festival, and later in November 2022 and March 2023 for collaborative programmes with CinemaAttic, Invisible Women and local artists and curators, and are now negotiating a longer term lease so we can create a permanent cinema space in our neighbourhood.
The building has excellent potential, but will need a lot of work to make it comfortable and accessible for our whole community. We're currently fundraising to make improvements to our cinema to make the movie-going experience even more enjoyable for our local community in Govanhill.

Over the years, GAMIS have been supported by many local volunteers, organisations and artists through their time, expertise and equipment. Our current cinema, including seats, projector, sound system and screen have all been kindly loaned to us by local people and organisations. We want to be able to build a better cinema with a high quality system which we can use more easily for our screenings and events. This means we can provide our community with a better quality space, ready for collaborative, high quality programming all year round.
The Target of £10,000 will go towards the following costs:
£3,500 towards portable surround sound speakers and cabling (we currently borrow this from a local artist for every screening!)
£2,500 towards a new mixing table and radio mics (mics are important for accessibility and we currently hire these out for each event)
£5,500 to cover some overheads including, space rental, storage and transport of the new equipment.
£500 contingency for inflation in equipment costs and production costs for your rewards.
If we exceed the target of £10,000, there are still plenty of costs your donations can support, including a contribution towards a new projector (We're currently using a domestic projector loaned to us by a very generous member of the community) and essential building improvements such as new doors and accessible toilets!
We have some great rewards for our donors, including limited editions from artists we have worked with, bespoke cinema experiences, dining experiences and of course POPCORN! we will also be announcing more rewards throughout the campaign, so make sure to sign up and follow our social media for updates.
