To refurbish the under 5s play area in Goddington Park and provide a safe and fun space for local children to play and residents to meet.
Who we are
We're the Friends of Goddington Park in the London borough of Bromley. We're all volunteers and many of us hold full time jobs too. We've planted saplings, had new bins and noticeboards installed in the park, and now we're turning our attention to the much neglected under 5s play area at the southern end of the park. It's the only dedicated under 5s space within a mile and serves families living on a local housing estate as well as residents whose visiting grandchildren, nieces and nephews enjoy the playground.
We've asked families at the local children's centre and residents living nearby to find out how they would like to see the play area developed.
"I have a 2 year old that uses that playground several times a week, she loves it but it needs some repairs. Seeing the playground rejuvenated and attracting more kids would be great."
"My children and now my grandchildren have used this playground. This is a very important resource for the local community. It's a lovely amenity that is in need of a refurbishment."
"I live next to the park. The slide and climbing frame has gone and the benches. Such a shame. I have small grandchildren who call me nanny park. Such a shame the park has gone downhill."
Our vision
We've got a 3 phase plan to improve the park which includes new equipment and surfacing, seating, new fencing, raised beds for planting projects with the children's centre and a woodland trim trail. In the future we'd like to run planting projects with the local children's centre and put up some bird boxes too. You can see our ideas on our website https://www.goddingtonpark.org/our-vision
Right now
Our first target is to raise sufficient match funding for a grant application for phase 1 - that's a new central climbing tower, springer and surfaces.
Our under 5s need our help
Play is vital for healthy social and physical development. If our under 5s are to grow into confident and healthy adults, they need lots of play opportunities and it's up to us to provide them. Will you help us give them the playground they deserve?
