We're creating a new home for Globe Gallery somewhere for the whole community to discover art through workshops, exhibitions and events.
by Globe Gallery in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom
We want to raise £10,000 to create a new home for Globe Gallery - a community space for everyone to enjoy and participate in art.
In 2020, Globe Gallery is turning 25. Over the past 24+ years, the gallery has played an important role in the contemporary art scene in the North East. We've brought established artists to the city of Newcastle and supported the development of emerging artists.
To mark our anniversary we have found a new home with space and potential to continue our work and develop a dynamic and flexible project, event, workshop, and exhibition space in the heart of the city.
Commercial union house has a rich history as a centrepiece in the fabric of modern Newcastle, and floor 7 is a fabulous space that played host to T. Dan Smith, amongst others, in its heyday. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring life back to floor 7, to restore and democratise this once exclusive space for use by the diverse communities of Newcastle.
Why we need your support:
We are asking for your help to raise £10,000 towards the redevelopment of the space. There’s lots of hard work needed to bring floor 7 back to life and make it fit for purpose as a calm, comfortable, and inclusive place for everyone.
One of our priorities will be to create a dedicated workshop area. This will allow us to expand our Blossom Tree project - an ongoing project which has used Globe’s exhibition programme to stimulate conversation about mental health. The new space will open opportunities for wider community workshops, training and development opportunities and talks by artists and professionals from the mental health care sector. The new space will also provide a home for an exciting new community programme, ‘In Here We Meet’, working closely with both Newcastle and Northumbria University.
Though we’re shooting for £10,000 to make the initial infrastructural changes we need to open Floor 7, if we were to exceed that target we could do so much more. Additional funds could allow us to employ a core development and community engagement team, expanding our reach and including more people in diverse programming and workshops. We could continue to improve the space for accessibility and buy key equipment to support workshop delivery.
We are eligible for a 50% match from Crowdfund Newcastle Culture through the Community Foundation Tyne and Wear. But we must reach a target of £5,000 to secure this funding. Please help us to do this.
