Save the Glenuig Inn: A Community Buyout

The Glenuig Inn is more than just a pub—it’s the heart of our community. Now, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring it into community ownership. With your help, we can ensure this historic, environmentally-friendly Inn continues to thrive for generations to come.

Why This Matters

Nestled in one of Scotland’s most remote and breathtaking locations, the Glenuig Inn has stood since before 1746. It has welcomed walkers, kayakers, cyclists, sailors, and swimmers, becoming a warm and vibrant hub for both locals and visitors. With six en-suite chalets, award-winning green initiatives, and a legendary reputation for hospitality, the Inn is a true gem.

Glenuig has always been a community that takes action. Despite being home to fewer than 200 people, we’ve already raised funds to build a beautiful village hall, run a community shop, and support a local history group—all managed by volunteers. Now, we want to take the next step by securing the Inn for future generations.

A Sustainable Future

The Inn isn’t just historic—it’s forward-thinking. It has been sympathetically restored with a strong environmental ethos, featuring solar power, wood pellet heating, and a waste biodigester. These eco-friendly initiatives have earned it multiple green awards, ensuring it operates with minimal environmental impact while maintaining its warm, traditional charm.

Our Goals

  • Warmly welcome both visitors and locals
  • Maintain an environmentally sound business model
  • Offer year-round employment and training opportunities
  • Support local businesses and food producers
  • Reinvest profits into the community

Our Plan to Buy the Inn

We need to raise £700,000 to purchase the profitable business, buildings, land, fixtures, fittings, and stock, as well as to cover legal fees and secure working capital. Our funding strategy includes:

  • Crowdfunder: This is where you come in! Your donations and purchases of rewards will directly support the buyout.
  • CommunityShares: A share offer allowing locals and supporters worldwide to become members. Our share issue has been awarded the Community Share Standard Mark for investor assurance.
  • Grant Funding: We are applying for funding from the Scottish Land Fund (SLF) and have already secured support from the Plunkett Foundation, Community Regeneration Fund, and Democratic Finance Scotland.
  • Commercial Loans (if needed): As a final measure to complete the purchase.

What Happens If We Don’t Hit the Full Target?

If we don’t reach our full target by the end of 2025, we plan to continue leasing the Inn while we work towards full ownership. Your donations and purchase of Rewards will help us to continue to operate the Inn under lease until such time we can buy it outright; we therefore reserve the right to use it in accordance with GCI's purpose as per our FCA-registered Rules, as required for Community Benefit Societies.

Any funds raised through this Crowdfunder will still support the Inn’s operation under community management, ensuring it remains open and thriving while we complete the buyout.

How You Can Help

  • Donate: Every contribution, big or small, brings us closer to securing the Inn. Click the donate button at the top right of this page to support us.

  • Spread the Word: Share our campaign with friends and family—every mention helps us reach a wider audience.

Where We Are Now

Since forming our Community Benefit Society in early 2024, we have made significant progress, including securing funding, conducting community consultations, and signing a lease to run the Inn from February 28, 2024. Now, we need your support to complete the buyout.

Together, we can ensure the Glenuig Inn remains a symbol of community, craic, and comfort for generations to come. Visit us when you can—we’ll make you welcome!
