Why we are doing this

This campaign is about more than steps.

We are raising awareness for Diabetes UK and encouraging more people to move their bodies in a fun, accessible and community-led way.

Diabetes awareness is very close to our hearts, as both of our parents live with Type 2 diabetes. As a Malaysian Chinese family, we also know that Type 2 diabetes can be more common in some Asian communities, which makes this campaign feel even more important to us.

We want to use our platform to talk more openly about health, movement, prevention, family wellbeing and the small daily habits that can make a big difference.

From July, we are taking on our biggest community wellbeing challenge yet.

As a team, we are aiming to walk the distance from Glasgow to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July until September. That is around 10,700km, connecting the city where Tempo was built with the place where our family roots began.

For us, this challenge is personal.

Tempo was founded by siblings May Gem and Liam, inspired by our Malaysian Chinese heritage, our family story, and our love for creating drinks and spaces that bring people together. Kuala Lumpur holds a special place in our hearts because it is where our family is from, and Glasgow is where we built Tempo from the ground up.

Now, we want to bring our community together to take on one big shared goal.

Our vision

Our vision is to turn this challenge into something that brings people together.

We want to create a community where people feel encouraged to move more, look after their wellbeing, and feel part of something positive.

After losing our Tempo Community space earlier this year, we have had to rethink how we deliver our community work. But our mission has not changed.

Tempo Community CIC still exists to support wellbeing, reduce isolation, create accessible activities, and help people feel more connected.

This challenge is our way of showing that even without a permanent space, we can still keep moving forward.

The challenge

We are using the StepUp app to track everyone’s steps as a community.

Our goal is to collectively walk the distance from Glasgow to Kuala Lumpur over 3 months.

With a team of 20+ people, this huge distance becomes achievable if we all play our part. Every walk, every step, every school run, every gym session, every lunchtime stroll and every dog walk counts.

We will be sharing weekly updates, community progress, leaderboard highlights and milestone moments as we make our way across the map.

Where the money will go

The money raised through this Crowdfunder will be split between Diabetes UK and Tempo Community CIC.

50% of the funds will be donated to Diabetes UK to support their important work raising awareness, funding research, and helping people affected by diabetes.

The other 50% of the funds will support Tempo Community CIC to run free and low-cost wellbeing activities at partner venues. Currently we are running a free weekly walk club every Monday and then a lunch time run club every Thursday.

With the funding we can look to host more free fitness and movement sessions with local fitness instructors.

Our goal is to make wellbeing feel accessible, welcoming and realistic for everyday people.

Why your support matters

By donating, you are not just sponsoring a step challenge.

You are helping us create something positive after a difficult year. You are supporting diabetes awareness. You are helping us continue Tempo Community’s work even after losing our physical space. You are helping people get active, feel connected, and prioritise their wellbeing.

Most importantly, you are helping us prove that small steps can create big change.

Whether you donate, join the StepUp group, share the campaign, or cheer us on from the sidelines, your support means so much.

Help us walk from Glasgow to Kuala Lumpur.

One step at a time.
