To help youngster that everyone else has given up on and giving them a second chance.
Many youngsters today are struggling for a variety of reasons. The youngsters that come to Second Chance have many varied stories to tell, but they mainly come from 3 main backgrounds, these being that they have been absued, either sexually, physically or emotionally. They come from a poverty stricken background, usually from inner city areas or have learning difficulties. This is a great over generalisation and some of the youngsters will be experiencing all 3 of these situations.
Many of the youngsters we work with do not attend school and if they do they are on a significantly reduced timetable. The youngsters attend our Rural Centre for one day a week in small groups particpating in various activities, which include fishing, kayaking, wood work projects, swimming, raft building etc. By particpating in small groups they learn new skills, gain confidence in their own abilities, learn to make appropriate relationships with their peers, and people in authority and have a sense of achievement.
We are very lucky at our rural centre that we have 37 acres upon which we have 3 lakes and 2 rivers which give us perfect facilities for our youngsters to learn to fish. We also run a small flock of rare breed sheep, and we have chickens and ducks, with our youngsters getting involved in the handling and care of these animals.
The youngsters we work with do not attrack sympathy and support from those that they meet as they wear their difficulties on the inside. These youngsters need our help to give them a chance to turn their lives around, and to start to make the right decisions to help them in the future and we believe we can assist with this.
We are unusual in that we do not charge for the services that we provide and we are not support by any form of government funding, we are funded 100% by donations. What we do is for the youngsters and any money donated will be spent directly on them.
