Give the gift of a "cooler" nursery

Aim

Our climate is changing, so is compliance for safer sleeping. Action is needed to keep the children in our care cool during the hot summers

At Little Pumpkins Nursery the health, safety and wellbeing of our children is paramount. As a Nation we are experiencing increasingly higher temperatures during the Summer period.  This year's extreme heat, coupled with an expected change in legislation regarding safer sleeping in early years,  has certainly highlighted just how urgently we need to adapt our provision in the nursery building.

The nursery building was not designed to cope with prolonged periods of high temperatures. This year so far, for the wellbeing of all, we introduced special measures across the nursery to keep children and staff safe in the extreme heat.  For example,  limiting our freeflow time from indoor to outdoor, changing daily routines, darkening out light and constantly monitoring temperatures.

Cited on our Government's Blog internet page it talks about "the last decade has been warmer than any previous decade on record, and summers we once considered exceptional are becoming the norm. Summer 2026 has already broken records with a new maximum temperature record for June" (July 2026, UK Health Security Agency).  Considering this we need a solution for the long term. 

The upfront cost for air conditioning, or similar system, is looking to be around £15,000 for our nursery building.  This is a large sum of money for us all.  Therefore as a Community Interest Company we are appealing to our community and beyond to support us raise the funds. The goal being a nursery that is safe, cool, and a comfortable environment. 

Air conditioning or similar will support our nursery in:

• Keeping nursery rooms at a safe temperature and be compliant with safer sleeping
• Reduce the risk of heat-related illness for children and staff 
• Avoid potential future closures caused by extreme heat; thus not impacting parents/carers work commitments.
