16th August 2022We are still beating Putin's censors to get new through to Russians
After 170 days we are still getting ads into Russia to show the truth about the war in Ukraine. In fact we've now shown over 401,000,000 ads.
We've done this despite constant, and increasing, censorship.
As usual I can't say too much about what we are doing, but I thought it might be useful to tell you how independent Russian media websites do this.
The Russian censor, Roskomnadzor, constantly blocks new website links, such as those from Russian news organisations who report the truth on Ukraine.
So journalists use mirror websites, with frequently changing URLs to host their news. The problem for Russians who want to learn more about the war, is that they need a new link every two days or so.
This is where Telegram, a messaging platform a bit like WhatsApp, comes in. Media outlets have a Telegram channel - and update it with their new mirror site location every time it changes.
So why doesn't the Russian government ban Telegram then?
The problem for the Russian government is that Telegram is very widely used in Russia. And it's heavily used by pro-war groups. So if they ban Telegram they look scared, and they damage their own side.
As you can imagine this is helpful for us and our friends in the free media....
Thanks again for your support,
Rob.
