Aim: Our pavilion needs urgent refurbishment and remodelling to accommodate the growing membership and enable us to offer more to the community
30 years ago a group of people in Gilwern started a bowling club. The Club has gone from strength to strength moving into the pavilion in 1998 and encouraging all ages to participate in the sport. Over the years our membership has increased, strengthening our teams and continuing to make a contribution to the local community.
We have outgrown the pavilion and it is in need of significant refurbishment. However the costs of maintaining the green to the high standard needed and the upkeep of the current pavilion are only just covered by members fees. We need an injection of capital to enable us to become self sufficient, sustainable and to meet our ambition of becoming a place where the community feels welcome and willing to support us.
Our plans include remodelling the interior of the building to increase the main hall space as well as replacing the toilets and kitchen. Conscious of the environment and in order to use energy as efficiently as possible we plan to install solar panels, change the heating system and embrace water conservation. The overall aim is to make the club sustainable for the future and allow it to continue to serve as a community hub
One of our primary objectives is to change the perception that the Gilwern Community Bowls Club is merely a seasonal, open-air sports facility. We envision the club as a vibrant, year-round community hub offering a variety of social activities, including private and group functions. By incorporating other sports like carpet bowls and darts, we aim to extend our reach and engagement throughout the year.
Lawn or carpet bowls is an exceptional sport that promotes interaction among people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. It is a sport that is accessible to all ages and levels of ability/mobility. It’s one of the few activities that can facilitate competitive and social engagement across the generations, crucial for mental health and social well-being, helping to combat social isolation and fostering meaningful intergenerational connections.
To achieve these ambitions, we need to carry out essential building and facility upgrades to our sports pavilion. These improvements will help us accommodate a wider range of activities and transform the club into a landmark sports facility that the local community will be keen to use and proud to support well into the future.
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
