A home is a place we are supposed to feel safe, secure, warm and loved. We have experienced the importance of having a home throughout ongoing Covid-19 lockdowns, lockdowns which have slowed the process and backlogged the movement of people moving on from temporary accommodation into tenancies. For many who have undergone the bad experience, bereavement, relationship or family breakdown that has resulted in the loss of their home, homelessness can have a devastating effect on people's sense of self, mental and physical health, and amplifies feelings of isolation and despair.
Whether sleeping on a friend’s sofa, staying in a homeless B&B or hostel or in the worst scenario – sleeping rough on the streets- being offered a new home is a lifeline, a chance to make a ‘Fresh Start’.
However, being given a tenancy is only a first step, what next? Being homeless means you have nothing, furnishing a house and making it into a home that's liveable when you have nothing is an overwhelming prospect and expensive project. With little resources and limited social networks as a result of homelessness, often people will be forced to go without essential items in their new homes, or be pushed into debt through attempting to afford the basic necessities to make their home functioning. Both options contribute to the cycle of homelessness; as people struggle to maintain their tenancies, and both have a detrimental effect on peoples self esteem and mental wellbeing, a loss of confidence which can have a negative knock-on-effect on various aspects of a persons social life, including employment.
This is where Fresh Start steps in, we are an Edinburgh based charity and our mission to ‘help people make a home for themselves’. One of the ways that they do this is by providing goods in the form of our 'Starter Packs' of everyday household items such as crockery, pots and pans, toiletries, cleaning products, curtains, bedding and much more – all the small things that are so vital. These Starter Packs, made up of largely donated and quality checked, partially purchased new goods, help people in the initial stages of their new tenancy, lessening the financial burden and stress involved in setting up a home and enabling people to sustain their tenancies and make their space homely after such a turbulent period.
Not only does Fresh Start provide essential goods to people but we also provide the social and practical support and skills to help people feel part of the community.

The Hit Squads are a service that Fresh Start provides where volunteers and clients work together to paint and decorate client's new tenancies -often neglected from refurbishment for long periods- this service both relieves clients of the cost of refreshing a space, and illustrates to clients that their community cares about them and is there to support them as they resettle.
Additionally, in our Community Food Pantry, Community Kitchen and Growing Spaces Gardens, clients work alongside volunteers to gain the confidence and skills needed to live independently. This is a key part of the journey out of homelessness – meeting new people, building confidence and self-esteem and learning practical life skills.

Finally, Fresh Start’s Training Initiative offers the opportunity to gain skills, experience and qualifications that help people to get back into employment. Trainees benefit from working in a positive and supportive environment alongside staff and volunteers and hopefully by the end of the course are ready to move into employment.
The funds from this prize draw will go to help people make a home for themselves after homelessness through our Starter Packs and Hit Squad services that operate throughout the City of Edinburgh.
