The spiralling global food crisis means that the number of children dropping of out school is increasing daily. The majority of them are girls.

In Somalia, 420,000 children are currently at risk of dropping out of school. Food prices here have soared due to the impact of the war in Ukraine, combined with the recent drought. Families are being forced to choose which of their children can no longer go to school. And it is often the girls who miss out, so that they can work to support their families in getting food and water.

Being out of school can have devastating consequences, severely limiting girls' prospects and putting them at much higher risk of early marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).  Without increased support, we could see all the gains attained in the past decade eroded.

You can help CARE International change the story for these girls.

  • £15 could cover school fees for a month
  • £20 could buy a school uniform
  • £25 could buy a back-to-school bag containing exercise books and pencils

14-year-old Aisha from Somalia is one of the many who had to drop out as her family relocated in search of food.

"I was so happy going to school. I felt like I had a chance in life. This drought has taken me back from where I was before. I now spend most of my time helping my parents do menial jobs so that we get money for food. I also walk long distances to get water for the family. I wish one day I can join my friends back at school but for now, my focus is on making sure my family survives.”

CARE International currently works in 104 countries, supporting millions of the world’s poorest people to find routes out of poverty.

Since we were founded in 1945 we have been are there to provide life-saving assistance when disaster strikes, and to help people rebuild their lives afterwards.

We work alongside people and communities on long-term programmes to deliver lasting change.

Our programmes and our policy work tackle the systemic causes of poverty so that people can gain the power to change their own lives. We place special focus on empowering women and girls because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the ability to lift whole families and communities out of poverty.

Thank you for your overwhelming generosity and support on this campaign so far - we couldn’t do this without your help.

Your donation will be used to support our work wherever the need is greatest.
