A One-of-a-Kind Ocean Artwork — On a Surfboard

This isn’t just a surfboard. It’s a striking, hand-painted, ocean-inspired artwork created live at Rising Tide Festival by Gemma Lessinger — a Cornish artist known for her deeply textural seascapes and her use of repurposed materials.

Gemma will transform a reclaimed surfboard into a layered, tactile artwork using discarded marine debris, upcycled fabrics, and fragments of coastal life. The finished piece will capture the energy and serenity of the sea — designed to hang proudly in your home, business, or oceanside space.

It’s a statement. A story. A symbol of the sea’s power and fragility.

This is a one-off collector’s piece, and all proceeds go to an ocean-saving cause.

Gemma has painted this board over 4 days at Rising Tide Festival, see the progress and final board reveal below:

This piece of art has been created onto an old, repurposed surfboard, with the texture in the painting being crafted from upcycled fibreglass offcuts from Rochfort Customs, a Newquay surfboard shaper.  Then sculpted on top of that is one of my textured pastes which includes ghost fishing net pieces from Waterhaul, rope found on Fistral beach and offcuts of cork from Corca Mar.  There is also offcuts of surfboard wax from Radical Wax and upcycled fabric incorporated into the ocean water.

The Cause

All profits from the auction will be donated to Oceana UK — an organisation dedicated to restoring the world’s oceans through science-based policy and advocacy.

With tonnes of marine debris, fishing gear, and textiles washing up on Cornish shores every year, this piece embodies the idea that what we discard still holds value — and that creativity can be a powerful force for change.

By bidding, you're not just supporting art. You're helping protect the very coastlines and waters that inspire it.
