A Roof Over Our History
Nestled in the heart of Lincolnshire village of Heighington, the Chapel of Ease has been a cornerstone of our village hosting countless weddings, christenings and other significant milestone events in the life of the village and individuals. Whether you have sat in the pews on a Sunday morning, attended the village Carol Service, paid your respects on Remembrance Day, sat in quiet reflection in the Memorial Garden, heard the chimes of the War Memorial Clock or just admired the building whilst taking your dog for a walk, you have been part of that history.
Alongside the Chapel, the Thomas Garrett Heritage Rooms were once the boys' school for the village and many residents still remember their time there. They are now used for arts, crafts and educational purposes with around 100 people engaging in activities each week. It is part of the glue that holds our community together.
These buildings have stood at the centre of village life for centuries - the tower is late Norman - but now they need our help. Time and the elements have taken their toll on the roof and we are faced with urgent repairs to protect this historic building.
Why focus on the roof?
Without a sound roof, the entire structure is at risk. By acting now, we can prevent further damage and ensure a safe and warm welcome for all. As part of the renovation we also plan to insulate the internal ceilings to help reduce heat loss and running costs.
The project will be tackled in three phases starting with the Chapel and moving on to the Heritage Rooms as funds allow. Once the roof is sound, we hope to concentrate on a wider refurbishment to include upgraded heating, lighting systems and a small extension to include better toilets and storage. Our objective is to preserve and indeed enhance facilities for future generations.
Whilst we will apply for grants we will need to raise at least £30,000 per year for the next 3 years from local sources. Please help us to sustain this little gem in the heart of Heighington. Every little helps, no amount is too small. Thank you.
