In November 2022, Anna, Cal, Catherine and Darcy bravely took peaceful direct and disruptive action to break through the denial and demand the end of new oil and gas. They were arrested on the M25 and charged with public nuisance, an offence that, if found guilty, carries the likelihood of a significant prison sentence.
Circumstances have meant that Darcy has pleaded guilty. Anna, Cal and Catherine are due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on the 19th May for a two week trial.
All four have incurred costs and these are set to rise as they defend themselves in court. Kind supporters have generously provided accommodation but funds are needed for travel and legal fees as two of the group will have legal representation.
Just Stop Oil may have hung up the hi-viz but those who took action are still being criminalised by a government that is choosing to fuel the climate and ecological emergency rather than protect its citizens.
Community is what will help us all as we navigate our uncertain future. Contributing towards the costs of those courageous enough to take action, as they face the prospect of prison, is a concrete way of showing our gratitude and support. Lots of people giving a little will make a lot of difference.
Anna, Cal, Catherine and Darcy are immensely grateful for your kindness.
