Adrenal Hyperplasia is a very rare life threatening condition raising money for specialist treatment to improve quality of life of Becky!
Becky was diagnosed with Adrenal Insufficiency at birth, a rare and life threatening condition, Becky has an even rarer form of the disorder, ‘Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which causes crippling fatigue and ‘hypertension’, her Adrenal glands don’t work properly . Becky cannot make the "stress hormone" Cortisol and as a result she is constantly unwell and at risk of adrenal crisis if shocked or poorly . Becky spends a lot of time feeling she has no ‘get up and go’ and has had many hospital admissions and now has off shoot medical issues. Her stomach cannot absorb her oral tablets properly anymore and she has severe gastric issues due to having to take oral tablets for so long. She now facies the possibility of invasive surgery to alleviate gastro issues which could helped by having the pump instead of undergoing risky surgery.
Becky had a trial of treatment called "Continuous Hydrocortisone Infusion Therapy". This involved seeing a private Endocrinologist in the UK and borrowing an "Adrenal Pump" to see if the treatment improves quality of life. The treatment was a success.
The current pump is on loan and Becky needs to buy her own pump or she will have to go back to tablet medication which does not work for Becky and creates further health issues due to their long term use. Becky’s condition will never be cured or go away. but her life could be drastically improved by having this special pump.
The Adrenal pump is currently unavailable to Becky on the NHS but is a successfully proven treatment to ensure Cortisol is delivered into the body at the optimal times. The pump can significantly help improve fatigue and exhaustion as well as help keep Becky out of hospital or prevent gastric surgery. The pump provides a more stable and better managed condition.
Becky has all ready saved herself and paid for appointments and blood tests for her pump trial privately . She is now needing the final £2999 to purchase her own pump and £500 medication/tests for the next six months.
