The Journal of Visual Culture (JVC) editorial collective stands with the people of Turkey and Syria in the aftermath of last months's devastating earthquakes in the region. We mourn the victims and wish their loved ones strength during this difficult time. Together with our friends, we also put our solidarity into practice by launching this fundraiser whose proceeds will go to the disproportionately affected.
The official response in Turkey has abandoned parts of the affected region, coming on the back of decades of racialization (some of the worst-hit areas are predominantly inhabited by Kurds and Alevis). In Syria, the earthquake has exacerbated already difficult conditions of war, displacement and struggle under a brutal regime. Hence the urgency of a fundraiser like ours, which aims to donate via nongovernmental organisations representing marginalised communities rather than using governmental channels or NGOs with no social/political basis.
WHERE YOUR CASH IS GOING:
We invite you to contribute to our fundraiser by purchasing an artwork or publication. Proceeds will be divided equally between two organisations: the Diyarbakır Bar Association (based in Turkey’s largest predominantly Kurdish inhabited city) and The White Helmets (also known as the Syria Civil Defense). The Diyarbakır Bar Association have made significant progress in their hometown and are now aiding the relief effort across the entire Kurdish region. We have identified this particular organisation on the basis of a member of our editorial collective having long known and worked with the individuals and communities involved in their work. The White Helmets is a reliable organisation formed of a team of local volunteers that have been providing emergency response in communities across Syria since 2013. They are now responding to the earthquake and receiving donations thanks to the Syria Campaign (registered as a non-profit in the UK as The Voices Project, a non-profit in Germany as Voices Project Germany and a 501(c)3 non-profit in the US as Voices Project USA).
