Aim

Supply solar water pumps to Malawi farmers. Drought is real issue here but we have underground water that we can pump for irrigation.

I work with rural farmers in Malawi farmers clubs promoting sustainable and climate aware farming techniques. However nothing here is possible without water and famine is always just over the horizon. Most agriculture here is supplied by the rains in the rainy season; these have become more and more unreliable due to climate change (yes its real) and with this years El Nino event they may not come at all.

Malawi has significant underground aquifers which my farmers dig for, at about 6m depth and then bucket up for their vegetable plots but it is impossible to do for their staple crops which is mostly maize. Using portable solar pumps we can raise enough water to irrigate these crops and harvest three times a year rather than just the once.

We have managed to raise funds for one pump which is now in use and the impact is huge; the farmers benefiting from it are expanding their fields and vegetable plots with guaranteed harvests.

One pump provides food security for up to 40 families and increased revenue as well from surplus sales.

All donations, every penny, will go to purchasing solar pumps. They are not expensive, about £300, so our target of ten pumps for ten farmers clubs is very achievable.

All donations will be gratefully received and acknowledged.
